Assembly finance committee backs the new tax amnesty; a full floor vote is still pending
The Legislative Assembly's Finance Committee on Monday gave a favorable opinion to the Finance Ministry's proposal for a new tax amnesty, Diario El Mundo and Diario La Página reported. The measure would waive interest, surcharges and, in some cases, fines, but the original tax would still have to be paid. According to El Mundo, the director of Internal Revenue, Marvin Sorto, told lawmakers that for traffic fines only the surcharges would be forgiven, not the fine itself, and that the amnesty does not apply to fines with a final ruling. If approved, it would be in force until December 11, 2026. The proposal still has to be voted on by the full Assembly to become law.
Los Chorros highway to close all day Sunday, October 25, for a rock blast
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) will close the Los Chorros highway on Sunday, October 25, from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., for a blast on a slope below the Los Chorros water park, Minister Romeo Rodríguez announced. The work is part of the widening of the Pan-American Highway and the construction of the viaduct, and some of the rock will fall onto the road, so it must be cleared before reopening. As alternative routes, the ministry suggested the calle al Volcán, the Quezaltepeque highway and the Comasagua highway via Jayaque. People who live in the area will still be able to reach their homes, and the minister said they will try to reopen earlier than planned. According to Infobae, Rodríguez also said the new highway will carry a three-year workmanship guarantee once it is handed over.
Port of Acajutla doubles container handling in 2026, its operator says
The port of Acajutla has doubled its container handling so far in 2026 compared with the same period of 2025, according to Luis Canto, general manager of Unión Portuaria del Pacífico (UPDP), quoted by Diario La Página, Contrapunto and Última Hora. Canto attributed it to higher exports and operational improvements, which he said have led exporters that used ports in Guatemala, Panama and other countries to move their cargo through Acajutla. The modernization plan with YILPORT Holding includes a new pier 610 meters long with a 17.5-meter draft; the tender is under way and works were expected to start between January and February. Canto also said container ships' waiting time fell from up to 12 days to less than 24 hours. He spoke at the TradeExpo El Salvador fair.
